Sonic Fans Think Amy’s Tarot Cards Are “Overused”

Sonic the Hedgehog fans aren’t too happy with Amy’s tarot-focused moveset in Sonic Frontiers‘ Final Horizon update and think that Sega has “overused” that element of her character.

Just a few days ago, Team Sonic released the Final Horizon update for Sonic Frontiers, essentially giving itself another chance at the game’s finale by adding in a bunch of new challenges (some that might actually be a little too hard) and letting players control Amy, Tails, and Knuckles alongside Sonic. Although fans have been excited about the update ever since it was first teased last year, the reception to it has been a little mixed so far and has kickstarted several new rounds of discourse.

One of the things that the Sonic community has been split on since the update released is Amy Rose’s moveset. In past games, Amy has mostly focused on using her Piko Piko Hammer, but Frontiers changes things up significantly by making most of Amy’s attacks and movement options include her tarot cards, a part of her character that was originally shown in Sonic CD, but has turned into one of her primary personality traits in recent Sonic games.

Although fans were largely happy with this part of Amy Rose’s personality making a comeback in Sonic Origins Plus, it seems that a lot of them aren’t happy about it being such a big focus of her moveset in Frontiers. Over on Twitter, one of the most talked about topics surrounding the Final Horizon update (well, aside from the difficulty), is the supposed overuse of Amy’s tarot cards.

One post from Twitter user DTBROS__YT says, “Honestly it feels like Sonic Team is overusing them for Amy’s gameplay and sometimes they feel unnecessary. Literally almost all of her attacks and abilities are card-based, and while some of them are neat, other times it feels like they’re just there just to be there”.

Meanwhile, Twitter user Vanished_san had a similar sentiment when it comes to Amy, saying, “I think the constant reminders of Amy’s tarot cards are really forced, considering they were only meant to be a small tidbit to her character. I like them being used in an at least inventive way like how Frontiers is doing it, (the tarot bike goes hard), but otherwise eh”.

Funnily enough, the comparison that both posts use is that it’s like if Knuckles had grapes as part of his moveset or constantly talked about them, considering that’s one of his small character traits. Although there are some Sonic fans who like Amy’s new moveset and the focus on tarot cards, as shown in the comments of this Reddit post, it does seem like the majority of the community are a little sick of it.
