Tarot
‘s Rotten Tomatoes score to improve.
MCU star Jacob Batalon’s new horror movie Tarot debuts with one of the worst Rotten Tomatoes scores of 2024. He’s played Peter Parker’s best friend Ned in five Marvel movies, including a trio of blockbuster Spider-Man films. But Batalon takes a darker turn in his new non-MCU effort, playing one of a group of friends whose innocent Tarot reading unleashes a terrifying curse.
With the Tarot release date now arrived, critics have weighed in on the supernatural horror film, and the verdict is less-than-happy for Batalon, Sony and company, as the film has debuted with a horrifying 7% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. If the trend remains this bad, Tarot will go down as one of the worst-reviewed major releases of 2024, but the movie still has a chance to recover, as only 14 reviews have been logged at the time of publication.
How Tarot’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Compares To Other 2024 Horror Releases
The jury is indeed still out on Tarot both critically and in terms of box office performance, as the film has only just released, and again, only a handful of reviews have been logged. For now, the movie ranks as the worst major horror releases of 2024 according to critics, coming in well behind the low-rated Night Swim and Imaginary, and far behind well-reviewed films like Abigail, Immaculate and The First Omen.

2024 has been a strong year for horror according to critics, with movies like Late Night With the Devil, I Saw the TV Glow and Stopmotion impressing reviewers. Box office for horror has, surprisingly, not been as healthy as might be expected, however. The Korean film Exhuma has been the biggest horror hit of the year, taking $95 million worldwide, with only $2 million coming in North America. Among American releases, Night Swim leads the way with $54 million worldwide, followed by The First Omen ($50 million) and Imaginary ($39 million).
It will be intriguing to watch how the rest of 2024 plays out for the horror genre, both at the box office and with critics. Big titles are still on the way, including The Crow, The Watchers, A Quiet Place: Day One, MaXXXine, and many more. For now, Tarot looks like a critical flop, unless its Rotten Tomatoes score is able to rally.
